6pm UK: An Evening with Nandana Dev Sen. Interactive Poetry Reading with Q&A by Farrukh Dhondy

Maldon Books is thrilled to be joined by Nandana Dev Sen, reading from Acrobat, her translation of a selection of her late mother's work. Nandana will also be joined by Farrukh Dhondy, author of Grannies, Groins and Growing Up: Sonnets from Early Memories for a Q&A, and both of their books will be available to purchase at the event.

Praise for Acrobat:

A radiant collection of poetry about womanhood, intimacy, and the body politic that together evokes the arc of an ordinary life. Nabaneeta Dev Sen’s rhythmic lines explore the joys and agonies of first love, childbirth, and decay with a restless, tactile imagination, both picking apart and celebrating the rituals that make us human. When she warns “know that blood can be easily drawn by lips,” her words tune to the fierce and biting depths of language, to the “treachery that lingers on tongue tips.” At once compassionate and unsparing, conversational and symphonic, these poems tell of a rope shivering beneath an acrobat’s nimble feet or of a twisted, blood-soaked umbilical cord – they pluck the invisible threads that bind us together.

An award-winning actor, writer, and child-rights activist, Nandana Dev Sen has authored six children’s books, translated into 15 languages globally. Nabaneeta Dev Sen will remain one of the best-loved Bengali writers of all time. She published her first (and very successful) book of poems at the age of 18, and grew to be immensely popular in every genre. "Even though Nabaneetadi was a towering figure in Bengali letters, very little of her work is available in  English. This is all the more reason to be grateful to her daughter, Nandana Dev Sen, who is a hugely  talented writer in her own right, for translating a selection of her poems into English." Amitav Ghosh.

This will be the first in store event in over a year, and Maldon Books are so looking forward to welcoming you back to the shop for the evening. The shop will be putting the following measures in place in order to ensure the safety of both staff and customers:

- We have ticketed this event to limit numbers, in order to arrange seats to be spread out safely.

- Our door will remain open throughout the evening to maintain ventilation, and we will also have an air purifier at the back of the room.

- Staff will be wearing face masks throughout the event, and customers are encouraged to do so as well.

- Hand sanitiser will be available at the door, to be used by everyone attending upon entrance.

We understand that there are many who might not be comfortable with the idea of indoor events, and we want to make sure our customers, and attendees of any bookshop event, feel safe to do so. Please know that you are welcome to contact us at any time if there is anything you might be unsure of ahead of attending one of our indoor author discussions or signings. We will always try our hardest to make them as safe as we can, and we will be integrating them back into the day to day running of our shop at a slow pace, to allow us to prepare for each one accordingly.

Tickets can be booked by following the link below, or alternatively, you can book your tickets directly in the shop, over the phone, or by email.
